Guitar Setup and Adjustment

Precision tuning for an effortless playing experience: we optimize your guitar's technical performance to unlock the full sonic potential of your instrument.

Precision work on string action for optimal playability.

A perfectly adjusted instrument is the foundation for any musical development. Many guitarists struggle with a string action that is too high, making fretting difficult, or unstable tuning that hinders their performance. A professional setup is not merely a maintenance measure, but a targeted optimization of the instrument's geometry, tailored specifically to the individual playing style of the musician.

In our Graz workshop, we view the guitar as a complex interplay of tension and counter-tension. Whether it is an acoustic western guitar, a classical guitar, or an electric guitar, the physical principles remain the same, although the precision requirements vary. We ensure that your instrument is not only tuning-stable but feels consistent and comfortable across every position of the fretboard.

Master Quality from Graz

The Adjustment Process in 4 Steps

  1. Comprehensive Initial Analysis: First, we examine the current state of the instrument. We check the neck angle, the flatness of the fretboard, and look for mechanical weaknesses in the bridge pins or the nut.
  2. Geometric Correction: Based on the analysis, the neck is precisely adjusted using the truss rod. The goal is a minimal bow that creates an optimal balance between low string action and the avoidance of unwanted buzzing.
  3. Fine-Tuning of Components: We process the nut and the saddle with millimeter precision. The intonation is exactly set so that the instrument remains in tune across the entire fretboard.
  4. Final Check and String Test: After installing new strings, a final verification is performed. We test the playability in various positions and ensure that the action exactly meets the customer's specifications.

Who is this setup designed for?

Our adjustment services are aimed at a wide spectrum of musicians. Beginners benefit significantly from a lower string action, as this reduces the physical effort required for fretting and prevents frustration during the learning phase. Advanced players and professionals often require specific adjustments for techniques such as bending or fast legato, which requires extremely precise intonation tuning.

Collectors who store instruments for long periods should also have a setup performed. Wood is a living material that reacts to humidity and temperature. Especially during the change of seasons, the tension conditions in the wood change, which often leads to a deformation of the neck.

How the work in the workshop proceeds

As soon as you drop off your guitar at our workshop in Graz, it is integrated into our climate-controlled environment. Since wood needs time to adapt to the surroundings, we allow the instrument to acclimate briefly before we begin measurements. We work with digital measuring tools and precision gauges to support subjective impressions with objective data.

Throughout the process, we document all changes. Should we discover during the diagnosis that repairs beyond a simple setup are necessary—such as a crack in the body or defective frets—we will contact you immediately to discuss a supplementary cost estimate.

What you should prepare for your appointment

To achieve a high-quality result, we ask you to inform us about your preferred string gauges. The choice of strings significantly affects the tension on the neck; a setup for .010 gauge strings will not function optimally with .012 gauge. If you prefer a specific brand or type of string, feel free to bring them with you or let us know the model.

Additionally, it is helpful if you tell us which problems you are currently noticing: buzzing at specific frets, difficulty fretting chords in the first position, or general tuning instability. This information helps us focus the adjustment precisely.

The Result: What you receive back

You will receive your instrument in a technically optimized state. In addition to the physical adjustment, we provide a short report on the work performed. We document the set string heights at the 12th fret and the condition of the neck.

Additionally, we provide individual recommendations for the care of your instrument based on the condition we observed during the work. This ensures you know exactly how to maintain optimal playability over a longer period. Photos of the work steps are available upon request.

Timeline and Appointments

The average adjustment time in our workshop is 5 days. This period includes the necessary acclimatization of the wood, as well as the time for precise processing and the subsequent settling time of the new strings. In urgent cases, we are happy to check the possibility of express processing, provided capacity allows.

What is NOT included in the Standard Setup

A setup involves the optimization of existing components. It does not include extensive repairs such as replacing a broken neck, fixing cracks in the body, or the complete replacement of the fretboard. Cleaning of extremely dirty instruments is also not included in the standard package but can be booked via our Premium Setup.

An important legal notice: We do not perform work on instruments containing materials from protected species (e.g., ivory or Brazilian rosewood) unless valid CITES documents are provided. This serves to protect endangered species and comply with international trade laws.

Price Calculation and VAT

Our prices are transparent and fairly calculated. The prices indicated in the table are final prices including the statutory Austrian VAT of 20%. For our business customers (B2B), we show the net amount separately. The calculation is based on the time required for precise manual labor and the wear and tear of our specialized tools.

Frequently Asked Questions about Guitar Setup

How often should a guitar be adjusted?
We recommend a professional check at least once a year or whenever you change string gauges. Especially during extreme weather changes in autumn and spring, the wood reacts sensitively, which can make a readjustment of the neck necessary.
Are the strings included in the price?
No, the cost of the strings is not included in the setup price. You can either bring your preferred strings or we can select suitable strings for you from our high-quality assortment, which will be charged separately.
What happens if I am unsatisfied with the string action?
Playability is partly subjective. If you find after the setup that the strings are still too high or too low for your style, we offer a free fine-adjustment within our warranty period.
Can every guitar be adjusted?
Yes, basically every guitar can be optimized. However, there are physical limits, especially for instruments with very low build quality or severe structural damage. In these cases, we will provide honest advice on the possibilities.
